2 baby guinea pigs died

Question by tyanna Reward: Log in to view Status: Pending a resolution
my guinea pig had 3 babys over 6 weeks ago, and they seemed all fine until about 2 weeks ago when we started to notice that the 2 blonde ones started loosing hair. we were feeding them more then once a day and making sure they had plenty of water and they were always inside so they wouldnt get cold. but about a week ago we woke up and the blonde female was dead. we didnt know what she died of and where pretty upset. today we got home from work and noticed the blonde male was extremely weak we got him out and put him in a nice warm blanket. he was having fits where his head was going in the air and his front and back paws were stretching out and he kept coughing and had black tar like mucas coming out of his mouth. we did notice that he was looking rather skinny but we thought it may have been because he was growing because we were feeding them plenty of food. he shortly died not long after.
im trying to find out what was wrong so that the other baby doesnt get what ever they had.
please help.
thankyou

no they werent related, we bought the male from a pet shop about a month before getting the female from our next door neighbour. i did do abit of research about pregnant guinea pigs because i noticed that the mother was losing some hair when the babies were about 2 weeks old. their was something called toximia that pregnant mothers can get and pass it onto the babies but it also said it was quite normal for pregnant guinea pigs to lose hair so then i started thinking that it might not have been toximia and then the babies started dyeing and now im just worried about our remaining baby. we woke up this morning and the other baby looks fine and healthy but seems pretty depressed and very quite which is very unusual.
we just want to know what they died from so it doesnt happen again to this baby or in future reference.

Do you know if the father and mother were related? Cancer, or some other genetic problem could be the culprit. We had a batch of puppies once that was from a mother and her pup, and several of them had some "issues" I would rather not describe.

the black tar you see may of been a mouth fungus covering the mouth of the guinea pigs lips making them sore and causing the guinea pig difficulty eating. there are several diffenet skin condition fur loss, reddening of the skin and itchiness may be a problem such as mange and fungal infections.also if the room there in is to hot.if its mange it can be treated with ivermectin. its like spot on for dog and cat but for small animals. my guinea pig had this and now his fine i do still rub in a tea tree cream were he use to scrath.also have you got a salt lick and minal stone in there cage they need this along with lots of hay and fresh veg.the baby guinea pig maybe depressed if there are no other pigs aroung them as they like to live together and are not soltre animals. i would take the baby guinea pig to the vets for a check up the vet will spot whats wroung if anythink and treat it. hope this helps. tez
