Air Conditioning shuts down automatically?

1986 Ford Crown Victoria, 5.0 v8, runs great, no leaks, seems to run hot. New radiator, new water pump, new thermostat, new hoses. PROBLEM: when I hit any type of grade (engine load), the air conditioner shuts down and the heater comes on. As soon as road levels, or if I take my foot off the gas, the air conditioner comes back on. Any ideas what I need to check next? Sensor, switch, vacuum line????
