Why does the front left and right rear brakes wear out first on vehicles?

It most probably has to do with the way the brakes are setup. Typically the left front and right rear operate of the same part of the master cylinder. Because the distance is shorter from the master cylinder to the left front (master cyl. is typically on the front left) the front left brake actuates first. Because the front left actuates first, second actuation would be the front right (next shortest distance), followed by the rear right as the activation of the front left brake then allows the fluid to go to the right rear the quickest of the two rears.

This is not typical. Front brakes usually wear out first due to weight distribution and the tendancy for weight to shift forward when breaking. This is why nearly all new vehicles have front disk brakes, but many still have drum brakes in the rear. The rear brakes just don't work as hard.

i agree with wade that typically the front brake pads almost always wear out first, rabbit could not be further from the truth!!! in the master cylinder typically the front resivoir is the fluid that works the rear brakes {both}. and the rear resivoir controlls the fluid and pressure to the front brakes. i am guessing that the reason your pads are wearing out is becouse when the pads were put on your vehicle the person that did it had udjusted them so that these sides are closer to the drum or rotor, so when you step on the pedal they are hitting the drum and rotor first and doing most if not all of the stopping on your vehicle, that would be my guess and that is assuming that all of the calipers and wheel cylinders are all in good operating condition..

again my guess to you is that yours are wearing out the front left and right rear pads first is becouse someone adjusted them to be closer to the drum and rotor than the others, so when you press the pedal they are doingmost if not all of the work, and the front right and rear left are adjusted to far out to touch the drum and rotor, so you get less wear on those pads

hope this helps
