Can a bursa sac on the elbow go away on its own, or does it need to be drained?

The bursa is a sac filled with lubricating fluid, located between tissues such as bone and is present in elbow joints too. I think that you mean inflammation of the bursa sac called bursitis. Inflammation may or may not be due to an infection as in a case of a fall when friction may trigger the inflammation. In this case ,it may go away on its own but it may be painful and pain relievers pills (anti-inflammatory)or an injection of cortison derivative in the joint will help. So will rest and immobilization of the joint.
Draining the fluid from the swollen bursa can only be is done in the doctor's office using a needle to suck out the fluid from the swollen bursa .The liquid can be then tested for possible infection which may require antibiotics. Signs of infection may be some high temperature, redness and pus in the joint. The reason a doctor visit and drainage may be necessary is to detect a possible infection .I wish you the best.
