Cruise control is stuck on and won't turn off!

I just bought a 98 Dodge Startus and decided to try the cruise control. Well it worked alright but wouldn't shut off so had to slam the brakes on fighting the car still trying to maintain the 50 mph I was going! Luckily I wasn't far from home so smoked the brakes a couple blocks to get it parked. When I shut it off and start it again the rpm's rev right up again so it's still stuck! Help! What do I do?
