Do squirrels carry diseases or rabies?

Question by ace Reward: Log in to view Status: Answer selected by AnswerPond
I am growing tomatoes on my deck & squirrels are biting into them.
If I cut off the part they bit into & use the rest is it dangerous of getting sick?
What can I do to avoid squirrels from biting into tomatoes & do they carry diseases or rabies?

Squirrels do carry rabies and do put their noses in dirty places. It is always frustrating to find out that they take one bit at a tomato and move to the next. If they could just eat and finish one, we could be generous and let them.
One way to deal with it may be to put metal netting around the tomatoes or some kind of fence around the area. Generally they dig under the fences, but it may delay them a little. I hope somebody else at answerpond will give you an easier solution.
