The word electrolysis consists of elctro & lysis. lysis means to dissolve or break apart .
so eletrolysis literally means '' to break something apart using electrolyte. '' . Simply we can say the process by which we can generate Hydroge ( Oxygen also ) from water is called electrolysis .
the principle of electrolyte was first formulated by Michael Faraday in 1820.
The chemical equation for electrolysis of H2O is as
2H2O + electrical energy = O2 + 2H2
