Fault: engines turns ok but sometimes will not fire- (now suspect fuel stop valve???)
Hi. I have owned the above car in the UK for 2 years - without too many probs. However- for about 2 months now I've been suffering the above fault. I want to avoid the local dealership [ a) astronomical servicing costs & b) don't trust them!!] so have handed it to local mech who has proven he is worthy of my business. The problem is sporadic (doesn't always occur) is mainly 1st start (morning) of the day - so using for work is out as it's unreliable, the engine will turn... (so the Battery's fine), but the damn thing refuses to fire. Now my chosen mech friend has replaced all the associated clear/white fuel lines, seal rings and both (large & small) fuel filters in the area above the fuel pump in the engine bay. The pump (by the way) appears to operate ok - turning the key you can hear the thing initialise pressure.

So here I am still with the problem and running out of options.

I have picked the brains of the dealership service dept. who has mentioned the existance of a 'stop valve' in this general area too - and that he has on 2 - 3 occassions had to supply replacements (either to his own workshop or to external customers) ie it is a part which has been known to fail. Compared to the fuel pump it's a snip (pump= 1500 item - stop valve 90 item) but obviously the vehicle is getting on in years and if I'm looking at multiple hours labour costs in strip down and rebuild I'd appreciate anyone being able to advise on their experience with similar sounding faults.

Many thanks

Col

PS. Oh yes, and before someone suggests it - yes there's plenty of diesel in the tank!!

You mention that it usually happens in cold weather. Check the fuel pump relay (even though you can hear it pressurize), fuel injectors, spark plugs.

If you try all those suggestions with no luck, please post back here so we can further troubleshoot.
