High pitched microphone noise

What causes that really high pitched screeching sound you always hear during presentations. It hurts my ears. Why????

That noise is called "feedback" and is caused when the signal (sound) going out of the speakers is sent back into the microphone. This can happen in many ways. The speakers may be too loud, most common is the person speaking may have his mouth too close, causing the sound to sort of "bounce" back and forth from mouth to mike and around and around. Second most common is that the person speaking has moved directly in line with one of the speakers, causing the sound to go straight from the speaker into the mike. Hope this helps.
