How does a very white-skinned Anglo achieve a tan without endangering
their skin from harmful solar rays?

It is proven that there is no such thing as a "safe" tan. A tan is your body's reaction to being exposed to solar rays and is in itself a sign of damage. Certainly however a sun burn is far more damaging and tramatic to the skin. If you want to build a slow tan, ie: increase the color and melanin in your skin you would need to expose yourself to the sun wearing a sunscreen of 15 for increasingly long periods. Tanning outdoors is preferable to tanning beds as they are more likely to cause you to burn initially. You's begin by applying the sunscreen and laying out 15 minutes on each side, 3 days a week for a week. Increase it to 20min per side the next week, 3 days a week. Maintain this throughout the summer and always wear your suncreen and you should acheive a natural tan you can maintain without burning. Keep in the mind the safest and fastes way to tan is to get the spray on variety...but I know that was not the answer you were looking for.

First of all, the only tan out there that does not endanger skin is the artificial kind or the kind you are born with. (not too helpful, right?) Ok, if you are still willing to risk it: Please check with your Dermatologist before doing anything!! A good base tan is easily built up either in a tanning salon or outside starting at as low as 5-10 minutes and building up time from there, ensuring you do not burn. Once a base tan forms, please make sure you continue to wear sunblock daily and go in for regular check ups with your Dermatologist.
