I have been diagnosed with Helicobacter Pylori - Infection of the Stomach. For a week now I have been taking the triple therapy of antibiotics. My symtoms of pain in my esophagus and right rib area have let up a bit, but the gas has increased.
I had a routine chest exray done and something showed up in the right diapharm area. The following other tested have now been completed are: blood test, ultrasound, echocardiogram. The result have not reached my doctor as of yet.
My question: I have had these symtoms for over 6 years now. What is considered early detection before damaged happens?
Your physician will have the answer after he get the tests results since it may vary with different patients. Since you are taking the triple theraphy , I assume that you also have ulcers which may be the reason for the pains in the esophagus . These medications have side effects but taking the antibiotics as prescribed is necessary. Discuss with your physician if side effects are not tolerable. Generally ,in most people the damage is limited to the digestive system and unless you have other symptoms , you should not be worried . Some people have no symptoms at all from this bacteria. In the meantimes ,you may read and compare your symptoms at these sites : http://www.helico.com/diag_general.html http://www.gicare.com/pated/ecdgs30.htm http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/hpylori/ http://www.gesa.org.au/pdf/H_Pylori_2nd_03.pdf
The chronic inflammation caused by H. pylori can present differently in individuals. Most individuals are considered to be asymptomatic, however with time it can lead to peptic ulcer disease, gastritis which can damage and alter the normal fuction of the intestine which could eventually gastric cancer (this is rare). The triple therapy of antibiotics is the first line treatment agaist H. pylori. It is important finish full treatment prevent further damage to the stomach or intestines. If you are feeling severe side effects speak to your doctor to see if he or she can give you an alternative treatment. However, do not just stop taking the medication without finishing the assigned prescription, because you can make the H.pylori become resistant to treatment without helping your body build an immunity agaisnt it. Hope you feel better.
