LED lighting for home?

Question by Leslie_S Reward: 25 Pond Points + 10 Knowledge Tokens Status: Answered
There are some new LED bulbs that are meant for household use that only use about 1 or 2 watts of electricity. Will they provide enough light to replace a 60 watt incandecent bulb, or should I wait until LED technology improves before I buy them?

The up side: LEDs are cheap, efficient, and don't burn out.
The down side: It produces a "harsh" light where the incandescent creates a "soft" light. It can be a strain on your eyes if you try to read using LEDs for a long period of time, same goes for fluorescent lights. Fluorescents (like LEDs) can also contribute to headaces in some people.
LED tech is pretty far along and the next step will most likely be organic light, such as phosphorescents.
It basically comes down to your tastes. My recommendation, LEDs will be good for utility lighting but will not be able to set the mood of your house.
