Mother hamster and babies

Why did my female hamster Mom put all her babies, 8, in her pouch? I was cleaning the case, too early I just found out. It just shocked me so terribly. Did I cause her some irreversable damage? I am so sad for my new little family. Thank you for your answer. Cylene

The pouch can be a way to carry the babies and protect them . I hope they are OK. A site for some info on hamster care at
