When you say "no math is really necessary." is it something you wish to avoid entirely or would you consider it if presented. If math is ok than I can recommend a very good book on the Physics behind Optics and light which may help in this regard. The mathematics included would for the most part be grade 12 high school mathematics as far as Canadian education system goes with some calculus although not necessary would serve as a benefit to further comprehension. The book is...

The specific chapters you may want to consider are 34 through 38.

This Book is in my opinion, the best introductory physics text out there. The authors, who are American, have done an excellent job in communicating the concepts with the utmost clarity and explain in detail the mathematics behind the concepts so as to make it easy to learn and understand for the novice interested in the subject matter.
