Pregnant at 33weeks with gallbladder problems

Question by hotmoma0663 Reward: 25 Pond Points + 10 Knowledge Tokens Status: Pending a resolution
I'm 21 years old and 33weeks pregnant. I have been having pain around my right rib cage and my doctor thinks that it might be my gallbladder. If i have my gallbladder removed while i am pregnant will the baby be ok? Or can i even have my gallbladder removed while I'm pregnant?

You doctor may need to know for sure if the problem is the gallbladder. Pains can be felt if bile stones accumulate and block the ducts. It is painful but generally not a danger to you, unless there is jaundice (and yellow in the eyes) or fever in which cases it could be an emergency. Otherwise, if the pains are not too great (no attack), it would be advisable to wait till after pregnancy when you may be able to get better treated. Remember to ask your doctor if there is an alternative to operation. Some attempts to dissolve the bile stones should be considered prior to the last resort (operation).Ursoditol (Actigal) may be used to dissolve gallstones or a treatment with sound waves to try to break the stones with high frequency waves among other attempts to avoid the operation. If the operation is still suggested, ask for a second opinion. The baby will be OK but general anesthesia should be avoided during pregnancy. I would be worried about a physician who suggest surgery when he is not sure if that the gallbladder is the problem.
