In my area, there is is a reddish residue that forms on drains, sinks and toilets from something in the water. What is this and is there any way to prevent it?

babytweety2yo is correct. What you are probably seeing is rust. Water filters are not effective against clear water iron which can leave red stains in tubs and toilets. However, you can prevent it by purchasing a water softener.

Water softeners can be very expensive (prices usually range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars), so you should decide if it is worth it to purchase a water softener or just deal with the residue by cleaning occasionally.
