My husband owes thousands of dollars to the IRS, unbenownst to me when we got married. Now that I'm his spouse, am I going to be punished too?? I filed married but separate last year, but can I continue doing that?? And, how can he get rid of this debt?? We want to buy a house in the next few years.

continue to file "injured spouse" with the IRS...you will not be able to do this forever...the debt will remain till he works out Something with the IRS...he can also be reprimanded to jail, if the IRS wants to...you will not be able to own a home, if you do the IRS can foreclose on it, and you will really have a mess then! get him to go to the IRS, or life will get worse...

Can IRS offset our federal tax refund for my spouse unpaid credit card bills, if we file jointly. He is unemployed.

If there is a judgement from a credit card company, they can garnish your taxes.
