Type of paint to use on metal for outdoors

What type of paint should I use to paint metal that will be kept outside in the weather?

If it is plain steel or tin, use a rust resistant, oil based primer. If it is alumimium or galvanized steel, use a latex. The alkali in aluminium or galvanized will destroy a true oil based paint, one containing vegetable oils.
