Why Can't I keep a speedometer?

Question by KAT Reward: 25 Pond Points + 10 Knowledge Tokens Status: Pending a resolution
Hi! I have a 93 Honda Civic CX 5spd. I am on my 3rd speedometer and this one is done too! The original lasted shortly over 100K and the other 2 perhaps the same. I took it too the local Honda dealer who simply suggested replacement ($400+ so no thanx). The last 2 were used. This one will still work on occasion but not consistently. It may simply start to work and can drop at any time. As well, the needle will often jump around, swinging erraticly. Then work or lie down again. Last weekend it worked both times on a 3 1/2hr round trip. This week so far not at all. My odometer doesn't work then either and that is the bummer since I would really have liked to keep track of the mileage on the old girl. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so far I am drawing a blank everywhere but there has to be more to it than 3 duds in a row. It is an electronic speedo btw, not cable. Thanx for the help :-)

Are there any after market generic ones available? When the original fuel pump went bad on my LUV truck, I bought a lifetime warrenty one at Parts America. The third or fourth time in a couple of years I went back, they didn't have the right one in stock. The kid offered me a generic one instead. I took it, installed it, and it has worked fine ever since, maybe 5 years, long enough I forget just how long.

If the odometer is not working with then it probably isn't a problem with the speedometer. Your vehicle measures revolutions per second of some point in your powertrain. your vehicle computer uses this data in a calculation to determine how far your car has moved. When you pull time into the equation then it can determine the speed that your vehicle was traveling while it was moving. If both you odometer and your speedometer are malfunctioning simultaneously then it is most likely an issue with the device that is measuring your powertrain revolutions. Since it is intermitant, it leads me to believe that it is something simple like a loose or damaged wire leading to the measuring device. As the car drives around, the wire could also shift, thus making intermitant connections

I would look in to this if i were you. You could potentially fix this for free
