Why is there a fan that comes on after I turn off my engine?

I have a 1997 Honda Accord SE (4 cyl. automatic) and recently, after driving any distance (short or long) a fan comes on in the engine right after I turn the car off... and stays on for about a minute or two. I don't recall this happening before, so I'm not sure how serious it is, and if it required repair immediately?
