Why did Adam think that his father hated him?

Adam hates his father because he thinks that his father doesn't consider him a man yet. Even though his father berates him several times, he still allows him to sign the muster book and join in the battle against the British. His father is actually very surprised when his mother tells him that Adam thinks he doesn't love him. Luckily Adam overhears that this is not the case.
