Self adjusters are bad about not working. If they are drum brakes, you have to manually turn the star wheel. Cars used to have a little slot you could poke a screw driver in and turn it down from the outside. With the car on a jackstand, run it out until the wheel won't turn at all. Then back it off a little. If it doesn't have a slot, you have to take the drum off to get at the star wheel. There is a ridge on inside edge of the drum that must be removed before you can put it on a properly adjusted brake. That is best done by having the drum turned, but you can grind it off with a stone in a drill. It may take several tries putting the drum back on to get it to where it is right.
