Cambodia is a country ravaged by civil war and corruption. The rise of the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot in the 1970s led to the deaths of literally millions of Cambodians considered to be "enemies of the state". Vietnam invaded in 1978 in response to violence against Vietnamese residents of Cambodia and warfare overflowing into the country itself. Bloodshed continued between the two countries throughout the 80's until a formal peace settlement was reached in 1991. The country has since achieved some political stability (despite a coup d'tat in 1997) and the economy is gradually gaining more strength.

One of the greatest problems Cambodia faces is corruption. The millions of dollars worth of aid provided by the U.S. and other countries are too often funneled into private accounts, instead of going to repair the countries damaged infrastructure. One promising note is the recent discovery of oil and natural gas deposits in the region. Such resources could help accelerate the growth of the Cambodian economy and push the plight of Cambodia to the forefront of the international community.
