is it possible to retrieve your deleted items or messages on a cell phone?

Most likely not, unless you have backed it up to your computer using a synch cable. You can try to bring your phone to your local carrier (Sprint, Verizon, etc) to see if their technicians can retrieve the data. The process will vary from phone to phone, but the odds of recovering the data easily are slim.

Also, if your phone uses a removable memory card to save the data onto, then you can try using a program like http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ which I have had success recovering deleted photos from a camera with once. That involved a more extensive process of taking the memory card out of the camera and putting it into a card reader in my computer. You can probably do something similar for your phone if the card is removable. Good luck.
