car only runs with key in start position

I installed a HEI distibutor and new coil in a chev powered hot rod. Now the engine will fire and will only run with the key in the start postion. As soon as you let the key retunr to run, the engine dies. what's gonw wrong.

Sounds like the power wire to the distributer is not staying hot when the key is in the run position. Check ignition switch position, and wiring. The switch may be pulling too far back and losing contact in run position. I am assuming you probably put a late model Chevy column in your rod like most.
