car makes a big cloud of smoke from the tail pipe when i crank it up and goes away

The smoke could be caused by several things:

1) Bluish colored smoke indicates burning oil. Perhaps a bad or broken ring on the piston or the valve guides are excessively worn.
2) white-ish smoke indicates steam. Water is entering the cylinder and boiling. Perhaps a blown head gasket or cracked head or block.
3) dark colored smoke indicates a rich condition in your air-fuel mixture. Carb adjustment or problem with fuel injection.

Not enough info to have a certain answer. May be time for a mechanic to have a look.
