I bought a 2003 ford taurus se 3 years ago.W hile making a right turn the car started to slow down.I accelerated, and it wouldn't go forward.I put the car in park and tried to go in reverse. It wouldn't even go in reverse. After having it checked by a certified Ford dealership I was told that the transmission needed to be repaired. The repair bill will be expensive .I want to know if it could be something other than the transmission.

Unfortunately, it is most likely the transmission. A few others have been having the same issue with you:

Try negotiating with the dealership telling them that it is a common problem (cite some sources as above) and they may be able to give you a steep discount as a courtesy. They will probably need to make a call to the manufacturer first since the manufacturer will ultimately make the decision.
