I would recommend no using credit cards at all, they lead down a very bad path. Really the only people that should use them, are ones that can afford not to. From personal experience they are not worth the limited usefulness they give you. If you need money it is better to get a loan from your bank for a much lower interest rate (especially right now with the fed slashing rates). It will be a fixed APR and much lower payments.

I disagree with Mark. I use my credit card for two primary reasons. All my bills automatically go onto my credit card, so I only have to worry about paying one bill a month. Secondly, I get 1.5-6% back on the things I purchase, so using my credit card makes everything cheaper than cash. I get %6 back on gasoline, (which at $3/gallon equals a 18cent/gallon discount). Credit cards also provide you with free insurance when renting a car, are necessary for many hotels, and over purchase protection when a vendor tries to screw you over.
