Centrifuging is done in laboratories when a solution has particles that need to be separated from the solution. Test tubes containing the material to separate are loaded into a centrifuge head into fitting buckets . The test tubes need to be adjusted to the same weigth as those in the opposite side to maintain the centrifuge balanced. The temperature of the centrifuge can be set and is generally cooled to 4C to avoid degradation of some proteins. The speed is adjusted to the needed one for the particular separation . Heavy particles will segregate to the bottom of the tubes and form a pellet that can be separated from the solution by decantation.
I hope it help.

The first answer is a good explanation of separating liquids and solids in a laboratory. There are many other uses. By preparing uraniamum hexafloride, you can prepare bomb grade isotopes. That is part of the evidence Iran is making an atomic bomb.
