What type of fluorescent tube? Compact Fluorescent tubes can get quite hot, and T-5 bulbs can as well. However the household ones are normally hot on the ends but cool enough in the center to handle. What application are they used for? And what are they mounted in, a closed container or mounting area will increase their heat and lower their life.

Both the conventional and compact ones get warm to the touch, but not hot. You can take advantage of them by putting a CFL bulb that makes more light than a 60 watt bulb in a fixture limited to 60 watts.
