Babies are very prone to ear infections because their ear canals are tiny.
A baby will fuss a lot mainly when lying down, will tag on his/her ears and may run an elevated temperature. Some mucus may be seen on the pillow. However baby can be fussy for different reasons. There are also ear check devices that can be purchased at pharmacies(I have no information on their performance).
An ear infection may be dangerous for a 1 year old baby and can lead to complications such as hearing loss. The safest approach is to take the baby for a doctor visit ASAP when an ear infection is suspected .He will administer antibiotics if needed however antibiotics will not help against a viral infection only a bacterial one and most are bacterial. Pain relievers may be needed for intensive pains.
I hope that by now your baby is well.
