how can i find out if the time chain is bad on my truck?

The best way is to look. Turn the engine around to TDC and check the timing mark on the cam gear. Does it line up exactly where it should? Sometimes you have to remove the timing cover and check for slop in the chain or if it has tensioners, check how far out the tensioners are. If you are really ambitious, remove the chain and hold it out sideways and see how much sag is in it. It should stay farely straight. There are so many differnt engines and styles of chain it is hard to tell you without knowing what the engine is.
