how to locate an electronical problem in a car

I have a Toyota Tercel 1991 and the battery light is on. I know that's not the battery the problem but I don<t know what it is. Could you help me out? ( I would like to know how to do tolocate the problem and what I could do to repair it). I'm pretty sure it's not the alternator because he's new and the ground seem to be alright.
