Steeples were oreganoly a pagan stature of the male organ to represent fertility. Over time the church adopted the structure as a status symbol. When Christ came he criticized them for their desire for status. eventually it became a belfry to call the masses and it could be seen from afar. Today that is not needed. So most churches will have a cross to represent the life and deth of Jesus as the lord and saver.
