making sure mother bird still caring for her young after i put it in a cage

i found a baby dove young but fully fethered a bluejay was trying to eat it so i took it put it in a bird cage with the door opened so the mother could continue to feed it and so she did till about 8 pm then she disapeared and left me with the baby im not sure what to do will it be too cold if i just cover the cage with a plastic cover but make sure there is air still comming in and what time should i put it back outside because i didnt want to leave it outside overnight because the mother wouldnt be sleeping with it and i wasnt sure that it wouldnt die of coldness. i thought about 4:30am i would take it back out for the mother to feed it. will it be to cold because the mother feeds it trough the bars of the cage she will not go in there with it.

A mother bird will abandon its nest and all baby chics once it smells the human scent on the nest. The chick is yours to care for now. Keep the bird maybe in the garage in the cage if its cold outside, remeber though birds carry diseases and lice too.Depending on the age of the bird, you can purchase insects from local pet stores to feed the little fellow. My daughter has done this and saved the lives of a few chicks. Remeber to use an eye dropper if necessary to administer a little water to the beek. It will dring if its thirsty. As it matures he will start flapping his wings to exercize in preparing to fly away one day. When this starts happening I would place the cage outside with the door open once a day while you babysit so no cats take advantage, and soon you will see his first and your final flight into the world.( They love little mealie worms)
