older compaq laptop problem

Question by mooseye Reward: 25 Pond Points + 10 Knowledge Tokens Status: Pending a resolution
It is an LTE 5000 series and it got dropped from about 2.5 feet a couple of years ago and has not worked since.
It would not power up or show any sign of life. No lights or sounds.
I dug it out today to see if it was repairable. After dissambling it and finding nothing unusual I reassembled the laptop.
Now when power cord is inserted, I get 3 or 4 beeps and the three lights light but that is all it will do. The power button seems to have no effect.
I have tried connecting it to an external monitor with no change.
Does anyone have experience with this problem or any idea what might be wrong?

I have had a similar experience with a HP laptop. Turned out to be the processor chip popped out of the socket. If you are comfortable with performing the repair yourself, it should be simple. Remove the processor and re-seat it on the socket. No guarantees that this will solve your problem, but it's worth a shot.

Also check if the RAM is properly seated.
