Rivers start from high altitudes (mountains) from rain water ,and spill their waters in the ocean . During their run they accumulate salts from rocks , stones and lands that the water dissolves before reaching the ocean or sea which are at a lower level . The concentration of the salt will increase if more water evaporates leaving the salts in the sea since only pure H2O evaporates as occured in the dead sea . However , if rains are aboundant there will be a replenishment of water and salt which will be

The sea actually started out fresh.. like rain water and over time dave is right salts built up. That is one of the problems with pollution.. it all goes somewhere.. and the oceans is where it ends up. Not to mention the ocean obsorbs a large percentage of the CO2 and by doing so increases it's acidity, that increase is causing an decrease in the ph of the ocean as a whole and increasing the size of the "deserts" of the ocean.
