smoke from the exhaust , loss of power & questions RE: turbocharger

Question by philmick Reward: 25 Pond Points + 10 Knowledge Tokens Status: Pending a resolution
I have a '99 F250 powerstroke diesel 7.3L. The engine lost power and there is dark blue/gray exhaust. I've ck'd the oil, air filter and fuel filters, all seem OK. This started suddenly. Turbo charger doesn't seem to kick in. I was driving in some deep mud. What should I ck next?

If the exhaust has sort of a sweet smell, you could have a bad head gasket. Try checking the compression.

Have you carefully looked underneath for a kinked or broken line of some type.

from the sounds of your problem you need to replace the turbo. the best way to check is to remove the air inlet hose from the turbo and reach inside to see if the impeller turns, or has slop in it when you move it up and down. but with that color of smoke, i would say your turbo is gone and you need a new one. usually what happens is the bearing or seals blow and your turbo quits spinning.
