what are the important laws relating to children and young people?

I don't think there are laws, except what you can't do. What is most important is to love them. Also, most of us were raised in dysfunctional homes, so look at your background, and DO NOT make the mistakes with your children that caused you suffering. I married a man, and thank God we did not have any children, he was so twisted from his childhood and when I finally heard the stories, I understood his behavior. You can do your children a lot of harm by continuing defense mechanisms learned in a bad childhood. Love them and go from there.
