what is the difference between lord of the dance and river dance ?

Riverdance was the original musical, started in Ireland, it starred initially Micheal Flattley, an american/irish dancer. Riverdanced toured the world and was very successful.
Now the next thing that happened has a few versions, but the most common was that Micheal F was a little arrogant, and a bit of a prima and decided to start up shop by himself. So he left Riverdance and created a musical "Lord of the Dance". He got a load of Irish dancers and choreographed the musical and trained everyone all up, and took it on tour.
Having seen both, I think I like the Lord of the Dance a little more, it was a little more free for some reason, although Riverdance, used the other nations dancing in it. More of a story in the Lord of the Dance.
