Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, so it requires the use of insulin. Type 1 is also often called juvenile-onset because it usually first occurs in infancy/chilhood/young adulthood. It is caused my aun autoimmune attack on the pancreas and people with type 1 must rely on insulin for life.

Type 2 diabtes is called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or adult-onset diabetes. It usually begins in mid to late adult-hood and has a number of contributing factors such as diet and weight. Most people with type 2 can manage their disease with diet and exercise and some medicine. In more severe cases, insulin may be taken.
