what will cause the fan belt torip on a citroen berlingo van the belt pulley or the alternator pulley

BOTH COULD DO IT, WHILE THE BELT IS OFF, WITHOUT ENGINE RUNNING OF COURSE, PUT UR HAND ON THESE PULLEYS AND WIGGLE THEM, AND TURN THEM, IF THEY WIGGLE OR ARE HARD TO TURN, I WOULD REPLACE THAT PULLEY AND/OR UNIT, SORRY FER CAPS, DID NOT REALIZE IT TILL LAST SECOND

could just be a stone got in there or the belt was at the end of its life as todd says check pulleys and check the allignment to see if all is nicely lined up and straight,belts do just go and they either fray and self destroy or snap if its a newish belt it may have been wrongly adjusted putting strain on the belt.look at the belt to see how it has worn and get back to us...
