vauxhall vectra keeps cutting out

On my p reg 1996 vauxhall vectra the engine managment light keeps coming on and tends to cut out. Then sometimes when i turn engine on i rev the engine release my foot then the car loses the revs and cuts out then the engine management light comes on.
